Illuminations and ornaments
Art of the book
I often saw in my youth in Morocco illuminations and calligraphies on parchment and paper. This cultural heritage has been enriched over the years by my studies in France, travels and encounters. Trained at the Applied Arts of Marrakech then graduated from the Fine Arts of Nancy (DNSEP), affiliated to the Maison des Artistes and member of the Ateliers d'Art de France, I opened my studio in 1995.
My dual Franco-Moroccan culture has certainly influenced my work. My illuminations, made on real parchment and enhanced with gold leaf, are a contemporary reinterpretation of our cultural heritage between East and West, which was rewarded in 2002 by the Grand Prix Régional des Métiers d'Art SEMA.
My artistic approach has also led me to rediscover paper. By stripping illumination of its colour and gilding, by revealing through relief the shapes of its letters and ornaments, a new aesthetic of this art is offered to us, an invitation to see illumination differently.
The illuminations that I propose, creations or copies of old ones, are presented in the form of paintings, artist's books and book objects.
One of the originality of my works also lies in the techniques used
• Illuminations made on genuine lambskin parchment, enhanced with 24-carat gold leaf, the colours are extra-fine water colours. The techniques used are mixed and meet the requirements of each work.
• Relief illuminations made of paper pulp using a "casting" technique, a contemporary nod to the old illuminations made on paper.
